BP has allowed Costner to test out six of his machines in the Gulf of Mexico in hopes that they will work efficiently.  According to John Houghtaling, from Ocean Therapy Solutions, the machines could start doing their job as soon as Friday, May 21.  Houghtaling, Costner’s business partner, says, “We know the technology works and we know it’s really the only solution.”  Even though these types of devices have been around for a few decades, Costner’s new ones are more effective and get the job done faster. 

This oil spill was caused by British Petroleum (BP).  They are required to pay for all of the damages that the spill has caused.  Considering that the oil is still spreading, the costs are constantly increasing.  As of now, the total amounts at $625 million.  That rate is just going to keep rising unless something, like Costner’s machines, can help prevent and/or lessen the impact of the spill. 

If Kevin Costner’s oil-separating devices work successfully and efficiently, the oil industry will be permanently changed for the better.  They can be used towards future oil spills and reduce the consequences that they have on the environment.  Overall, these new and improved centrifugal oil separators, developed by Ocean Therapy Solutions, could hopefully be the solution to all current and future oil spills.  They could give us the ability to preserve reefs and other ocean life.

Many students at our school love these new self serve places because they give them the opportunity to add more variety to their yogurt. Sophomore, Chloe Gould, says, “Orange Leaf is like a Sweets from Heaven, but instead of candy it’s yogurt.” You have the ability to prepare yourself as little or as much yogurt that you wish to eat. Junior, Samantha Rosen, exclaims, “Yogurtland is so good! It’s awesome putting on your own toppings and making your own creation.” Students are not only attracted to the wide variety of options, but also the taste of the frozen yogurt as well. Ross Goldstein, junior, says “It’s so delicious that the lines are always out the door!” As you can see, many students feel passionate about these new and upcoming hot spots.

These stores not only provide you with quantity and quality, but also healthy alternatives! At each of the self serve yogurt places, there is a wide variety of freshly prepared fruit toppings. In addition, there are plenty of “no sugar added” flavors. If you’re looking for a healthy alternative, stop by one of these local stores and order up!

A new Orange Leaf is opening up in Boca Raton in Plaza Real off of Camino Real. Currently, their other closest location is in Delray Beach (16950 Jog Road #111S Delray Beach FL, 33446). Eco Yogurt Lounge can be found along Yamato Road (1200 Yamato Road Suite C5 Boca Raton FL, 33431). Yogurtland is unfortunately not as close in location to either store. It’s locations are in Pembroke Pines (15820 Pines Blvd Pembroke Pines FL, 33027), Coral Springs (2806 University Drive Coral Springs Fl, 33056), and will soon be in Weston as well. According to our students, it’s well worth the drive!

The March of Dimes Walk is an effective way to help raise money and awareness for the health of babies. The money collected is used to help prevent birth defects, infant mortality, low birth weight, and premature birth in newborn babies and infants. Babies born before 37 completed weeks of pregnancy are considered premature.  They have both a very high death rate and a very high disability rate. March of Dimes is a great organization that works to help save babies’ lives, or at least give them a chance to survive.

In order to make a difference in a child’s life you can start by making a generous donation.  It is as simple as going online, calling, faxing, or even mailing a check to the foundation.  All donations go towards the cause of helping babies live a long, healthy life.  With the help of the community and March of Dimes organization, many babies will hopefully have that chance.  If you would like to get involved or find out more information, check out their website at www.marchofdimes.com.

It seems almost as quickly as pictures and memories fade, so do the trends we’ve dedicated our lives obsessing over. As we transition from mere children to young adults, we must realize that beauty is skin deep. Our identity is not based on what we wear, but rather on who we are and what we make of ourselves. While being engulfed in the styles plastered all over magazines may get one foot through the door of one’s dream job or into the cliche “popular group” at school, attitude and how one carries themself are what truly separate each person from just another face in the crowd.

In today’s world, some feel it is necessary to conform to the ideals of society. However, in order to truly be a unique individual, one must break from the chains of uniformity. Focusing life around the perfect pair of stilettos or the cutest little black dress you can get your hands on, will only take you so far in life’s trivial journies.

While some may refer to Vogue as frequently as others are dedicated to sacred religious texts, will praying to Anna Wintour (Editor-in-Cheif of Vogue) get you through life? Image is more then how you dress and the color of your make-up pallette. It is purely your reputation, how you carry yourself, and what you make of the opportunities and obstacles you’re presented.

A wise man once said, “Today is not a dress rehearsal.” In life, you may truly have only one chance to make a lasting impression. Although presentation may play an integral role, the personality and sincerity you bring to the table trumps all.

To truly be beautiful, one must shine from the inside out, as the face you show the world is merely one piece of the puzzle. After all, it’s not what you wear, but how you wear it.

In regard to shoplifting, carjacking, or other forms of nonviolent criminal acts, video cameras prove to be very beneficial.  In past, the only form of catching these devious individuals was through the actual viewing of the crime.  However, with all of the advances we currently have, that job is now left to a higher authority.  Within a period of time or even in the moment of the transgression, police officials, who view the footage, are on the job in the capturing of the suspected delinquent.

On the other end of the spectrum, video cameras may play an integral role in saving innocent people’s lives.  Throughout parking lots or garages, strip malls, or other various areas, 24-hour footage is constantly being relayed.  It may seem as if crimes do not necessarily take place in populated areas, however, in some cases it may be quite the opposite.  In reference to the horrific occurrences at Boca Raton’s very own Town Center Mall, this was the case.  Unfortunately, at that current time, there were no recordings of this action, and therefore, no single individual was able to thwart such an evil.  Consequently, it has become a requirement to issue these devices to ensure safety throughout our everyday lives.

When it comes to driving, some people regard traffic signals with certain blindness.  Without caution, some may speed through a red light or a visibly stale yellow one.  Without care, they don’t pay attention to the fact that as their light turn’s red, the lights perpendicular will soon be changing to green.  It is possible for collisions to occur in the duration, leaving many people potentially injured.  Just recently, video cameras have been posted at major intersections.  If in fact a car goes through a red light, a picture of their license plate is quickly taken and not long after they are sent a hefty fine.  The large sums of money owed to the government are in the hopes that people will stop running red lights and hopefully learn from their actions.

Video footage in general gives a sense of security in that someone is watching out for you, making sure you are safe.  As a result, these technological wonders have the ability to prevent future violations of those who believe they can get away with anything, literally.

Other popular jobs during the summer are at ice cream shops, fast food restaurants, local businesses, and as camp counselors. Working as a camp counselor is a great hands-on experience in working with younger kids.  Moreover, it also teaches you great leadership skills while guiding a group of children throughout the summer. Students at our school have already signed up to be counselors at Camp Palmetto, Saint Andrew’s Sports and/or Day Camp, or even the summer camp at the JCC.  Regardless, you will not only enjoy yourself, but also build upon the workmanship skills needed for the future.  
   
In addition, internships in your preferred field are another great way to spend your summer. They grant students the opportunity to get a taste of the real world and aid them in the understanding of how to do the job that they hope to make their future career. Some of the most common venues for internships include: law firms, doctor’s offices, newspaper or magazine companies, etc.  This may prove to be an integral aspect in gearing you towards your occupation down the road.  The only downside is that you usually don’t get paid for being an intern. Despite the lack of financial support, an internship can help you attain a job that pays really well in the long run.  If you are successful during your time as an intern, you have a greater chance of getting a job in that field later on.

Overall, the summertime may be an opportunity to gain life lessons, future occupational goals, or even hands-on experience.  If the time is used wisely, you may very well surprise yourself as far as your previously doubtful capabilities.  Depending on how you decide to spend your time, you may have a very entertaining season and make a lot of money simultaneously.  The summertime is an adventure; it all depends on whether you plan on playing it safe, or going along to see what’s in store.
