Since May 19, 2009, there has been one word on peoples mind: glee. After Adam Lambert and Kris Allen battled it out on American Idol, Fox had a sneak preview of the new show. About 9.62 million viewers tuned in and made it FOX’s new hit comedy.
Glee is musical, drama, and comedy about a high school glee club that is run by their Spanish teacher, Mr. Shuester (Matthew Morrison), who wants to bring the glee club back to its glory when he was in it. Rachel Berry (Lea Michele), Mercedes Jones (Amber Riley), Kurt Hummel (Chris Colfer), Tina Cohen-Chang (Jenna Ushkowitz), and Artie Abrams (Kevin McHale) are the misfits who try out. Later, Mr. Shuester recruits Finn Hudson (Cory Monteith), the football team’s quarterback. Also joining the glee club is Noah Puckerman (Mark Salling), Quinn Fabray (Dianna Agron), the head cheerleader, and other football players and cheerleaders.
The glee club have a bumpy start and have lots of obstacles in their way, most of them from the crazy cheerleading coach, Sue Sylvester (Jane Lynch). But with the help of the guidance counselor, Emma Pillsbury (Jayma Mays), the glee club is on the way to becoming number one in Ohio.
Glee, being a musical, features some of the songs by today’s biggest artists. The show has already featured songs by Journey, Beyoncé, Carrie Underwood, Heart, Bon Jovi, and Usher. Soon the show will feature songs by Tony winners Idina Menzel and Kristin Chenoweth, Kelly Clarkson, Rolling Stones, John Lennon, and Barbra Streisand. Most of these songs have been released and in the Top 20 of the Top Music Downloads chart.
Glee has averaged 7.41 million viewers per week with the nine episodes that have premiered so far. The creator of the show, Ryan Murphy (Nip/Tuck), said that unlike the High School Musical movies, he would rather have Glee be a show where the characters perform the songs on stage, rather than “doing a show where people burst into song”.
Glee has a cast of Broadway actors (Morrison was in Hairspray and Michele and Ushkowitz were in Spring Awakening), movie actors (Mays was in Epic Movie and Lynch was in The 40-Year-Old Virgin and Talladega Nights), and singers (Riley tried out for American Idol and McHale was in the boy band NLT). Also its guest stars include Grammy winner Josh Groban, Tony winner Kristin Chenoweth, Emmy nominee Victor Garber, and Tony/Emmy winner Debra Monk. Kristin Chenoweth told LA Times “The kids of Glee said I inspired them and in inspiring them, they inspired me.”
Glee is a big hit with high school students, too. Sophomore Stacey Taft said, “Glee is the best show ever!”
Also sophomore Ariella Ben-Nehemiya says, “I don’t know how, but Glee keeps getting better and better.”
So tune in to FOX every Wednesday night at 9 PM to see Glee for yourself as the club takes the journey to regionals.
