Many fans of the Cirque du Freak series have been anticipating the arrival of the movie. The movie came out on October 23, 2009. Making books into movies always runs the risk of angering devoted fans. However, the content has to be shortened so it can fit into a movie, without it running on for too long. Unfortunately, this movie is not made as well as it could have been.

While the movie was acceptable, the books were much better, as it is in most cases. Many elements were changed and many characters were unnecessarily added. “Monkey Girl” (a new character) became Darren Shan’s sweetheart, spicing the romance way too soon. In the series, Darren does not experience romance until many books later, and with a completely different girl. Additionally, Darren’s family and “Monkey Girl” is captured by Steve and his accomplice, as a fight ensues. The movie made it seem like this was the climax. This has changed the entire story outline, and I honestly do not know how the next movie is going to fix this to go along with the books.

Overall, the actors picked for the characters did their job well. However, the producers did not do a good job of portraying the relationship between Steve and Darren. The producers made Darren seem too much of a pretty boy and a pushover, and Steve too much of an angry adolescent. The boys were actually closer than the ridiculous portrayal of the movie.

Hopefully, the next movie will be better and there will be less changes of the story outline, but first, the producers need to correct what they messed up in this first movie.
