Justin Bieber: The Musical Prodigy

Written by Erin Donohue, Entertainment Editor

As a twelve year old living under the poverty line in Canada, fame wasn’t the first thing on Justin Bieber’s mind. But through a series of videos posted on YouTube for his friends and family, his small town life was about to change for good.

According to his website (www.justinbiebermusic.com)  Bieber expressed his talent along with others in a competition called the Stratford Idol, where he placed second. With no vocal training, he showed impressive talent over those who had been previously vocal trained. Bieber also plays the guitar, drums, trumpet, and piano.

Shortly after the competition, he began putting the videos on YouTube, which is where marketing executive Scooter Braun first heard Bieber’s abilities. Braun, from So So Def, then flew Justin Bieber out to Atlanta to meet with Usher back in 2007. A few months later, he met with Justin Timberlake and was faced with the decision of which record company to sign with. In October of 2008, he was signed to Island Records with Usher and released his first album, “My World.”

Bieber started out by covering artists like Usher, Justin Timberlake, and Edwin McCain, adding his own style, which caught the marketing executives’ eyes. Ever since he was discovered on YouTube, Justin Bieber has gone on to produce various music videos that can be seen on television. When asked what her favorite thing about pop sensation Justin Bieber was, junior, Erika Laman stated, “I really love his music. It’s catchy and I understand exactly what he means in his lyrics.”

Though his ambitions have changed from his original dreams of being a professional hockey player, Justin Bieber is well on his way to becoming a pop sensation. Now fifteen, Justin Bieber has developed into an artist that can relate to the common day troubles of adolescence. His ingenuity and creativity are what allow him to write such heartfelt melodies as “My World” and “One Less Lonely Girl.” Justin Bieber has always had big dreams despite the difficulties of his childhood. Ryan Jaskot, senior at West Boca High, said “I really like Justin Bieber’s new music. I think I’m going to buy his album as soon as it hits the stores. He is one of my favorite artists.”
