Or 19,430 feet to be exact. In an effort to raise funds for the Children’s Safe Drinking Water Program, United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees and Water for People’s Playpump Technology, Chicago native Lupe Fiasco rallied alongside a star-studded cast to climb Africa’s highest mountain, Mount Kilimanjaro. His posse included actress Jessica Biel, artists Santigold and Kenna, actor Emile Hirsch, and other celebs to raise awareness for this cause. With the help of renowned scientists who have been desperately endorsing clean water to developing nations around the world, these courageous individuals embarked on a seven-day, 50-mile route to the mountain’s peak.

During their journey, viewers (like myself) were able to log onto SummitontheSummit.com and select any designated member of the climb, as they were constantly updating their respective pages with “tweets,” pictures, and video blogs. Audiences could also follow them in a GPS-like format thanks to media outlets such as Twitter, Facebook, and Myspace.

What most spectators don’t normally realize is that these celebrities had to undergo intense training in order to be equipped to partake in this courageous endeavor. After all, Kilimanjaro is the highest freestanding mountain in the world. Temperatures can range anywhere from 90 degrees on the first day to below 0 by the last. These participants indulged in one of the most intense and physically grueling experiences in their lives en route to the mountains near 20,000-foot peak.

Despite these arduous conditions, and a nasty snowstorm that slowed down their voyage, the Summit on the Summit team arrived at the mountain’s peak Tuesday, January 12th—all in one piece.
