After countless FCAT practices on LTM days, West Boca reclaimed it’s “A School” title. Walking our spirit-less halls, you would never know. In order to transform the vibe on campus from dull and dismal to spirited and excited, students and teachers must make an effort to make the most of the hours spent at school.

According to the Student Government Advisor, Mrs. Cohen, building spirit here at West Boca is a daily struggle. This year however, Student Government (SGA) has a lot of ideas up their sleeves hoping to make it a little easier to come by. SGA has requested permission from our own, Principal Stenner, to liven up the mood at school with more pep-rallies. In the past, squeezing more then two pep-rallies a year into West Boca’s busy schedule has been out of the question. However, considering the fresh start our school is off to this year, it seems like almost anything is possible.

While some teachers complain about students missing valuable class time, the question is raised whether loosing half an hour of class a quarter constitutes a student body more excited to be at school. Considering that the general population at West Boca spends more time enclosed between the gates of our school then they do at their own homes, is there harm in making it worthwhile?

Throughout the year, SGA meets on a daily basis determining just what it will take to boost the school spirit here at school. Mrs. Cohen says her ideal way to promote school spirit would be to, “get teachers and administrators to consistently show spirit as an example.” If the stands of the football stadium were packed with students and teachers decked out in “Bulls” gear, Junior Drew Strochak thinks the student body will react a lot more positively. So get out to the fields plastered in your most attractive Bulls outfit. Cover yourself and your friends in body paint and the numbers of your friends on the field, and make the extra effort. Mrs. Cohen is all about the realization that, “School isn’t just about books and pencils; it’s about the whole picture.” Don’t loose sight of the hundreds of after school actives that you can be a part of. Support your friends at their games and performances, and soon you’ll be proud to be a bull!

I don’t quite think that will ever make a difference.

It’s like saying “Simon says…” or something..

School spirit, or any type of spirit, shouldn’t be a mime activity. If the admins and the teachers in the school want kids to feel school pride and spirit, they should make it so we actually feel like we want to be here, and not like we’re in jail. Even still… jails and schools were designed by the same people anyway, so what can anyone do anymore? Also, kids should run (or should be in charge of a club or group that runs) the pep rallies, not Ms. Cohen, or any teacher for that matter – unless they understand, and are willing to let us decide what provides the most spirit during the rallies.

Word going around about our lame pep rallies just makes us “less spirited” anyway.. I hear stories about Spanish River’s rallies or Boca High’s.. They seem much more exiting and spirited.
