West Boca High School’s Homecoming came as a breath of fresh air; not only due to the weather change, but also as an escape from the seriousness that has surrounded this time of year. With all of the dress up days and after school activities, the student body here at West Boca was given the opportunity to come out of their shells and show some school spirit.
Perhaps more than ever, students showed their spirit by dressing up for their favorite day. Teachers, students, and administrators alike watched as their friends transformed into superheroes, rock stars, and nerds all within a span of five days. For the first time in the history of the school, West Boca had a combined pep rally, putting our entire student body of over 2200 students in the gym for an awesome display. Senior Emily Parks said pep rally was her favorite because “I’m finally a senior and we get to experience that feeling of being at the top.”
Friday night, the Homecoming game took place on the Bulls’ home front. Although, they were defeated 45 to 3, they played hard against Dwyer, one of the best teams in the state of Florida. People showed up at the game decked out in Bulls attire. Some sported body paint, while others made shirts, but as a whole, the stands were filled with blue, tan, and white. At half time, the Homecoming King and Queen for the senior class were announced. Jamie Torres and Emily Viskovich took the crowns, getting the crowd cheering even more.
After a long night at the game, the members of Student Government arrived at the school early Saturday morning to decorate for the dance. They used streamers and colorful paper to transform the gym into the set of a “Candyland” board, following the theme of this year’s Homecoming dance, “Sweet Dreams.” Four hundred and fifty-eight tickets were sold; a number lower than most years, but nonetheless, the night was still a success. The DJ played a variety of songs to get people moving from their seats to the dance floor. Refreshments were served in the lobby, and a bag and shoe check was provided to ensure the security of everyone’s belongings.
Students, as well as teachers, dressed their very best for the event. Sequins and ruffles filled the gym, as the ladies in attendance made their entrances. Males, wearing dress shirts and ties, showed a new side. Those not dressed appropriately (i.e. jeans) were sent away. The night made for a brief getaway from the usual teenage silliness, and showed a new sophistication for the students here at West Boca.
