Spotlight on Catie Staszak
.
Written by Rachel Roth, Features Staff Writer
Catie Staszak, senior, has always had a strong passion for horses. She has been riding horses for over thirteen years. Her mom has been riding horses since she was a teenager, so it runs in the family. Catie lives and breathes horseback riding. Her everyday routine includes going home, riding her horses, and taking care of them. Currently, she has a horse named Nuance, and also rents another named Pokey in Wellington. Besides riding at home, Staszak trains in Wellington for horseback riding competitions. She has been competing ever since she was four years old and goes to competitions every weekend. She has even qualified for the National Finals. Catie explains, “I love to compete. It’s my favorite part of horseback riding”. Her special talent has opened her up to many opportunities.
About two and a half years ago, she entered herself in a horseback riding writing contest and, as a result, received a high score. Due to this significant achievement, an editor from “Sidelines Equestrian Magazine” offered her a job to write for their magazine. Catie frequently writes for an editorial called, “Junior Perspective”, where she is able to explain her experiences, opinions, and give advice to others about horseback riding. It is truly an admirable accomplishment for a high school student to have a job at a nationally distributed magazine.
Other opportunities that have been available to Catie are traveling and scholarships. She has been able to travel all over the country for horseback riding such as: Pennsylvania, Vermont, Alabama, and all around Florida. Also, Catie was chosen for a Pathfinders college scholarship opportunity for her talent and dedication in riding horses.
As you can see, Catie Staszak is a very skilled jockey who has an unconditional love for horses. She hopes that when she enters college, she will be able to ride for a Division One riding team. Her dream is to become a professional equestrian and compete in the future Olympics. Hopefully she will fulfill her dreams one day with continued persistence and dedication!
