Teenagers all across America wait in anticipation each week as MTV delves into the lives of those on 16 and Pregnant. This show has been the first of many reality shows that depict pregnant youth. The trials, tribulations, and struggles that any teen mom could possibly face are these teens’ potentially unfortunate realities.
The choices that these teens have to make and the life skills they are taught are unlike any of their peers. The emotional rollercoaster that a teen may go through when faced with the heart wrenching decision of giving her child up for adoption is truly ineffable. The struggle of facing a fiancé who no longer has interest in her or her son is cruelty in itself. However, the biggest changes of all must come within oneself. Entering motherhood is the realization that the attention must be shifted so that both parties can be taken care of in the proper manner.
It has been argued that shows such as 16 and Pregnant glorify the life of being a pregnant teenager. Most people can agree that this situation is not the ideal track for young girls. We question the predilections of one who thoroughly enjoys a show such as this. Austin Miller, a senior, says “It teaches teenagers that they need to be responsible or they could make choices in the future that could negatively affect them.” In the same respect, sophomore Rein Jaackson believes “It positively influences people not to get pregnant at a young age.”
It is obvious that the life of a teen mom is far from glamorous, however, ultimately life altering. What some may believe to be a miracle, others would view as a horror. In a sense, it is almost as if MTV is trying to inform you of what not to do. Overall, Alyssa Panagos, who is now a senior, thinks that it is aired simply, “So that we are informed of the possible effects and consequences of our actions.”
