AP Apps-What you need to know
Written by Marisa Kaplan, Print News Editor
Getting into an advanced placement class next year just got a little harder. West Boca is now implementing an application process for students who want to take AP classes in the 2010-2011 year. Applications will be reviewed by each department chair where each student will be evaluated and either accepted or denied. At least two teacher recommendations and several prerequisites are also required in order to apply for certain AP courses. Students must also complete one application per class.
One reason for the change is the overwhelming amount of students in many AP classes who may or may not be qualified to be in those classes. Since 2008, AP scores, ranging from 1 to 5, have increased tremendously across the country, which increases students’ chances of succeeding in college. Teachers around school are becoming more open to the new application process. Ms. More says “I think this is a good idea in order to restrict overpopulation in certain classes, but those classes with few students to begin with probably won’t have as many for next year.” Advanced Placement applications are now available on Edline under Contents in the AP Information folder or in the media center to be printed for a small fee. The list of classes available to apply for is also on Edline. Completed forms are due to the Guidance office by January 29.
The accepted lists will be posted outside of Guidance on February 12. Accepted students may drop classes in the Guidance office and slips are to be returned by February 19. Information on AP classes will be available Thursday January 14 in the theater at 7 PM. West Boca’s AP teachers will be there to answer questions for interested students and parents.
