Save the World, One Dance at a Time

According to the movies, Homecoming is supposed to be all about having fun, and high school, in general, should be the time of your life.  These movies have fooled us all.  Everyone knows that there are schools where the entire student body participates in spirit week and there’s perfect attendance at the Homecoming dance, but West Boca just isn’t one of them. In order to have more student involvement, Homecoming should be dedicated to a deeper cause; changing the world one dance at a time.

People would be more willing to spend their money to attend Homecoming if it was for a good cause. Having fun and helping the less fortunate, where could it go wrong? Each year, Homecoming could be dedicated to an organization: The American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (ASPCA), National Coalition for the Homeless, St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, etc. A percentage of the money raised would profit the charity, and the rest of the proceeds go towards funding for the school. The price of the dance may increase slightly, but what’s really important is the impact you are having on those in need.

The school should also be encouraging students to attend Homecoming, especially if it supports a charity.  Most students decide not to go because they could easily attend an after-party.  What’s the fun in going to an after-party only to hear about the great times that went on at the dance.  Save yourself the confusion and attend the actual dance.

No schools have been known to have attempted this idea, but who says you can’t start a new trend?  This would be no different than if the school was actually holding a fund raiser. West Boca has hosted Relay for Life many times and each occasion it has been a success.  So this new idea is like the Relay for Life event except mini-sized.

Homecoming isn’t exciting to most students at West Boca, but there is a way to make it better. By donating this event and some of your money, you can make a difference locally, nationally, and even world-wide. You can’t keep “waiting on the world to change” when you have the ability to do it yourself.

Congratulations to your idea Leah!!!! It’s a SUPER IDEA. It makes the dance and it’s cause more meaningful and worth attending. You could add, a dance competition, in order to make it more fun and have something to talk or argue about, afterwards in your after parties.
I hope that the Student Government will read this article and will plan the Homecoming Dance of 2010 a night in which by dancing and enjoying, the students will be giving joy to others.
