“And so the lion fell in love with the lamb… ,” which is when teenage girls not only became obsessed with this one of a kind romance novel, but also when they themselves fell in love with their “dream” guy, Edward Cullen—the vampire. Who knew one hot topic could take control over television, books, the internet, and ultimately, the big screen. Why when one good thing comes about, every other company must blow it out of proportion. They grasp every opportunity they have in order to appeal to its’ biggest audience—teenage girls.
Stephenie Meyer turned a blood-sucking monster into a beautiful creature. Sparking a new love for vampires among her avid readers. Once Twilight hit theaters, the popularity rose for HBO’s tv series True Blood and the CW’s The Vampire Diaries, along with many other forms of entertainment rose almost instantly. Yes, they are all great for watching, but isn’t it a little bit excessive? They all have to do with vampires, and they have similar story lines. One vampire story is enough.
Why did this new vampire genre come along now, why not back when Bram Stoker’s Dracula first came about? Probably due to the fact that it wasn’t appealing to the teenage girl audience. Everyone knows that girls between the ages of 11-17 make the best fans. They go all out for things that they are obsessed with: t-shirts, buttons, bags. You name it, they have it. There is no way to explain this over dramatic lust for such ridiculous things, but artificial teenaged girls are easily sucked into it.
Basically, the entertainment business takes advantage of its audience. Yes, they are “giving them what they want,” but it can’t hurt to introduce a new idea every once in a while. The excessiveness of everything is becoming redundant. You always believed your parents controlled what you watch, when it’s really you who has the power.
