Heroes Need More Than a Cape

A super-hero is someone who is able to sweep in and selflessly save the day without choosing to be recognized for all of their gallant actions. Unfortunately for us, super-heroes don’t exist, but what we do, or rather did, have is real life human beings who can be considered role models, and even heroes. But sadly, over the years, the quality of these real life heroes has been diminishing.
There always seems to be some new scandal among actors, musicians, and athletes alike; point in case, Tiger Woods. We’ve all heard this story before; huge super-star, who, in their entire career, never had as much as a smudge on their record, is now having their true character exposed. There is also the all too familiar type of celebrity that at one point of their career was the epitome of what a true role model is, but later on in the road takes a turn for the worst while the entire world watches their self-destruction. And those who are truly affected by the lack of quality heroes in our society are the kids who had once admired such individuals.
It appears that kids today will not be able to have the same fun-filled childhood of squeaky-clean clean boy bands and music not containing profanity, but rather be doomed to a life of so-called hero’s being arrested for DUI’s. Where have the morals of society gone? Do we no longer care about quality of character? These ‘role models’ that are looked up to and idolized should be anything but. Our society has become tainted with placebo heroes, and needs to regain control of qualities that can actually be considered heroic.
The American society doesn’t need any more Britney’s and Pee Wee Herman’s, what it needs is a better quality of hero, as well as recognition of what a true hero is. He may not come in a cape and spandex, but will still be able to save the day.
