Bigotry in Boca

There is a time where the freedom of speech is taken advantage of by people who preach hatred and bigotry on those who don’t share the same beliefs as them. We live in the twenty-first century, hasn’t anyone in this country learned how to judge a person beyond their ethnicity and sexual preference?
It’s appalling to witness this sad fact existing right in our community. The Westboro Baptist Church from Topeka, Kansas is infamous for its demonstrations mainly against homosexuals and Jews. They not only make an effort to attend funerals of soldiers who died serving in Iraq and Afghanistan but ignorantly state that their deaths were “judgments of a just G-d,” according to the Anti-Defamation League of Pacific Southwest. However, since April, its primary focus has been the Jewish population. This church has already protested in many cities all over the country, and on Monday the infestation of Palm Beach County began.
They may be our opponent when it comes to sports or competitions, but on Tuesday, we were proudly an ally of Spanish River against this assembly of fools. Not only are these people going to Spanish River High School, but they’re also holding protests at the Anti-Defamation League and the Jewish Federation of South Palm Beach County where the private Jewish school, Donna Klein, is located.
Our city needs to come together and show that no matter what these ignorant people say, they can not influence any of us. They don’t have the power to deem anyone as being immoral, but unfortunately this group of naïve people have the right to say whatever they want, even if it is ludicrous. Freedom of speech should have its limits.
