UFL Logo and Motto
Written by Zack Schwartz, Online Sports Editor
It’s survival of the fittest in life and in sports. There have been many professional football leagues that have tried to compete with the NFL. The first was an 8 team league, called the AFL which eventually combined with the NFL. Since that time no leagues have lasted such as the USFL, the XFL, and the Arena League. These leagues are now gone from popularity and financial problems. This year a new league started called the United Football League, or UFL. The UFL consists of 4 teams and they just ended their first regular six game season.
The league consists of the Florida Tuskers, The California Redwoods, The Las Vegas Locomotives, and The New York Sentinels. The league like now extinct NFL Europa, is not trying to compete with the NFL, but trying to be a sort of minor league system. Clearly, this can be seen in their league motto “Where Future Stars Come to Play.” The league is trying a new way to entertain people in some locations that do not have any football teams.
Many of the players in the UFL are former NFL players that just couldn’t cut it. Some are guys that are just looking for a chance to be looked at by NFL teams. The coaches are some former NFL coaches as well. An example is Las Vegas’ Head Coach Jim Fassel, best remembered for his Superbowl loss with the New York Giants.
So will the UFL last is the question that is on everybody’s mind. With limited fans right now and weird color uniforms that are probably not going to sell that much it looks like the UFL revenue could dry up quickly. Even if it does not last the UFL will be remembered as just another way that players had a shot to play the game they love.
