A Titan Turnaround

Written by Andrew Stempel, Sports Editor

During last year’s season, the Titans surprised the NFL by starting 10-0 with Kerry Collins taking the snaps. However, they split their remaining six games and made an early exit in the playoffs. When this season started, most people believed that their solid defense and running game would get them a spot and potentially deep in the playoffs. But by going winless in their first six games, Kerry Collins seemed as if he couldn’t repeat his stellar season just a year before.

Then as if the situation couldn’t get any worse, the coach of the Titans, Jeff Fisher, tried to be funny by wearing a Peyton Manning jersey at a charity event. The same week he put on the jersey of the division rival quarterback, Jeff Fisher made another important decision by sidelining starting quarterback Kerry Collins. After the Titans owner, Bud Adams insisted that he start Vince Young, Fisher gave him another chance at the reigns of the Tennessee offense. Fast forward five weeks and the Titans are now in the hunt for a playoff spot at 5-6.

Throughout their past five games, the Tennessee offense has come to life. They’ve scored at least 20 points in those games and their defense has finally resembled the powerhouse they were just a year ago. After allowing Tom Brady to dismantle their secondary and score 59 points, the defense has not allowed more than 17 points in 4 of their last 5 games.

In their most recent game against the Cardinals, Vince Young was able to put up 387 yards through the air which included the game winning touchdown to Kenny Britt as time expired. Young led the Titans offense on a 99 yard, 18 play drive that took the last 2 minutes and 37 seconds off the clock. Matt Leinart was forced to watch Vince Young once again complete a winning drive resembling the National Championship game just 3 years ago between Texas and USC.

Despite having a losing record, Tennessee still has a legitimate chance to make the playoffs in a weak AFC. With a date against the Colts this Sunday, the Titans are the hottest team in the NFL coming into this game. If they so happen to beat the Colts, they have a soft enough schedule to finish the season at least 9-7 and clinch a wildcard playoff berth.
