The Dolphins beat the favored Patriots this past weekend to keep their playoff hopes alive

Miami Dolphins, Miami Dolphins, Miami Dolphins number 1! The Miami Dolphin song has been played after scores, but do its lyrics hold true? Well, the Dolphins are coming off a division title winning season, finishing last year with an overall record of 11-5. This came as a shock to most seeing as Miami was playing with a so called “fragile” quarterback and a rookie coach. They also have one of the hardest divisions in the league with the New York Jets, New England Patriots, and Buffalo Bills. As football fans know every season is different.
The Fins are basically a third of a way done with their season with a 6-6 record. To some this might not seem that great this late in the season, but it is vital to look at the schedule the dolphins had to face. With a schedule that some say was the hardest in the league, it is amazing that the Fins are still in the hunt for a playoff run. Coach Tony Sparano has been able to rejuvenate his team after a shaky 0-3 start to the season. The Dolphins have 4 games remaining, and if they win all of them they will find themselves playoff bound again this year.
Probably the most surprising part of Miami’s season has been the play of the young guys on the team. Both rookie cornerbacks, Vontae Davis and Sean Smith, have played unbelievably well against the Terrell Owens, Steve Smiths, and Randy Moss’ of the league. Also on defense is Cameron Wake, the Canadian League standout last year. He occasionally plays on 3rd downs and seems to always make a play on opposing quarterbacks. His quick jump off the line and speed to make the play makes him a weapon the Fins can use for years to come.
The young wide receivers have also begun to learn the offense and produce on the field. Brian Hartline, the rookie of out Ohio State, and second year play Devon Bess have been the spark to the Dolphins passing game. They have been able to learn from Greg Camarillo who seems to be a 3rd down weapon for quarterback Chad Henne. Chad has had to take over the role of leader after Chad Pennington who was injured in a game earlier in the year and is out for the rest of the season.
The regular season is coming to a close and the Dolphins are right where they want to be, in a playoff race. As long as the Dolphins continue to work on both sides of the ball, the future looks promising. The Fins are a team to be reckoned with, so the rest of the league should watch out.
