As prom tickets are officially on sale, many seniors are thinking about the most appropriate way to ask their ideal date to prom. While some choose to simply ask, others choose to put their creativity to the test, and ask their potential date to prom in an original, personal manner.

Senior, Ashley Adams asked her boyfriend, Matt Mulroy to this year’s prom by writing, “Prom?” on a baseball and throwing it to him from her softball practice to his baseball practice. Seeing as they both play similar sports, using a baseball as an invitation was sweet and personal.

Last year, Junior Katie Feyko’s boyfriend Daniel, a graduated senior from West Boca’s class of 2009, asked her to prom in a very unique way. He brought her out to dinner and once they were seated, he told her that he had left his wallet in the car. He went back to get it and then returned to the dinner table. When they were leaving and headed towards the car, Katie spotted balloons attached to his side view mirrors. Inside the car were chocolates and a teddy bear just for Katie. Daniel told her to pop the balloons, and once she did, a note fell that said, “Look up at the stars.” She looked up at the sunroof and saw that question, “Prom?” written in gold and silver star stickers on the glass of the sunroof. Katie was flattered by all the time her boyfriend took in coming up with the perfect way to ask her to prom.

This year, Senior, Erin Heidel was asked to prom by her boyfriend Billy in well thought out approach as well. He brought her to a movie, to dinner on the ocean, and after they ate they took a walk on the beach. Together they walked up to the lifeguard tower and he told her he would be right back. When he returned, they looked down at the sand together and he had written, “Prom” in the sand. Erin was touched by the sensitive side she had never before seen in her boyfriend.

Other popular ways of inviting your preferred date would be by writing a song, planning a scavenger hunt, or spelling it out in places such as their driveways, the classroom white boards, or even publicly over the announcements. The end of senior year is an important time in everyone’s life, so make the most of it and show your creativity as your perfect date to prom!

October is usually associated with Halloween, but did you know that it is also National Breast Cancer Awareness Month? This October actually happens to be the 25th annual one. All over the country, people, businesses, and organizations are holding and participating in events to help the cause. A lot of money is being raised to help find a cure for breast cancer. Anyone can help out and contribute!

There are several breast cancer fundraisers that are taking place right here in Boca Raton. For example, the Think Pink Rocks concert that took place Saturday, October 3rd in the Mizner Park Amphitheatre. There were a variety of well known musicians performing there, such as: Shontelle, DJ Cassidy, Kardinal Offishall, and DJ Webstar, as well as the main artist, Akon. The event had everything from live, upbeat music to the world’s largest cupcake! The pink cupcake, all 1,315 pounds of it, broke the Guiness World Record and was presented at the concert to support breast cancer research. It was served free of charge to the people who attended the concert.

Another fundraiser held in Boca for breast cancer, is the Making Strides Against Breast Cancer Walk, which is also in Mizner Park. The walk takes place Saturday, October 17th in the early morning. There will be free food and drinks offered before the walk begins. Also, this walk is a great way to earn community service hours by volunteering before the walk. West Boca High School’s Key Club is providing volunteers for this event.  Furthermore, this walk is a fundraiser that you can get involved in and help out with by not only raising money for breast cancer, but by helping your community as well.

The month of October has a lot more to offer than just Halloween. Besides the concert and the walk, there are many more events and fundraisers that anyone can attend. If you are interested in finding out more information, would like to make a donation to breast cancer, or learn about upcoming events, you can visit www.nbcam.org.
