As this year winds down, we would like to thank all of our avid readers for supporting and promoting our new website.  As we say goodbye to the 2009-2010 school years and our senior staff, we look forward to saying hello to the upcoming one.  With a trunk full of ideas and a fresh set of staff members, we hope to not only improve our current site, but also strive to continue the passion and dedication put forth by this past year’s staff.  As we embark as the new senior staff in the next school year, we plan to come back rejuvenated and ready to take on any challenge.

We feel so grateful and fortunate to have been promoted as the upcoming editors of “The Westside Story” website.  We hope that we can uphold the level of achievement that the previous year has set for us and transcend it.  “I don’t know you say goodbye I say hello.”

Beauty is Skin Deep

Fashion icon Coco Chanel once said, “Fashion fades, only style remains the same.”

It seems almost as quickly as pictures and memories fade, so do the trends we’ve dedicated our lives obsessing over. As we transition from mere children to young adults, we must realize that beauty is skin deep. Our identity is not based on what we wear, but rather on who we are and what we make of ourselves. While being engulfed in the styles plastered all over magazines may get one foot through the door of one’s dream job or into the cliche “popular group” at school, attitude and how one carries themself are what truly separate each person from just another face in the crowd.

In today’s world, some feel it is necessary to conform to the ideals of society. However, in order to truly be a unique individual, one must break from the chains of uniformity. Focusing life around the perfect pair of stilettos or the cutest little black dress you can get your hands on, will only take you so far in life’s trivial journies.

While some may refer to Vogue as frequently as others are dedicated to sacred religious texts, will praying to Anna Wintour (Editor-in-Cheif of Vogue) get you through life? Image is more then how you dress and the color of your make-up pallette. It is purely your reputation, how you carry yourself, and what you make of the opportunities and obstacles you’re presented.

A wise man once said, “Today is not a dress rehearsal.” In life, you may truly have only one chance to make a lasting impression. Although presentation may play an integral role, the personality and sincerity you bring to the table trumps all.

To truly be beautiful, one must shine from the inside out, as the face you show the world is merely one piece of the puzzle. After all, it’s not what you wear, but how you wear it.

Caught in the Act

As the whirlwind of technological advances continue to mount, being sneaky is suddenly not as easy as it used to be.  While many still continue to commit stealthy crimes, they are unaware of the inconspicuous eye that may be watching their every move.  It is surely not uncommon in today’s world to have live video footage in a multitude of locations around your area.  Whether they serve the purpose of recording crimes or traffic violations, it all boils down to the basis of safety for the public.

In regard to shoplifting, carjacking, or other forms of nonviolent criminal acts, video cameras prove to be very beneficial.  In past, the only form of catching these devious individuals was through the actual viewing of the crime.  However, with all of the advances we currently have, that job is now left to a higher authority.  Within a period of time or even in the moment of the transgression, police officials, who view the footage, are on the job in the capturing of the suspected delinquent.

On the other end of the spectrum, video cameras may play an integral role in saving innocent people’s lives.  Throughout parking lots or garages, strip malls, or other various areas, 24-hour footage is constantly being relayed.  It may seem as if crimes do not necessarily take place in populated areas, however, in some cases it may be quite the opposite.  In reference to the horrific occurrences at Boca Raton’s very own Town Center Mall, this was the case.  Unfortunately, at that current time, there were no recordings of this action, and therefore, no single individual was able to thwart such an evil.  Consequently, it has become a requirement to issue these devices to ensure safety throughout our everyday lives.

When it comes to driving, some people regard traffic signals with certain blindness.  Without caution, some may speed through a red light or a visibly stale yellow one.  Without care, they don’t pay attention to the fact that as their light turn’s red, the lights perpendicular will soon be changing to green.  It is possible for collisions to occur in the duration, leaving many people potentially injured.  Just recently, video cameras have been posted at major intersections.  If in fact a car goes through a red light, a picture of their license plate is quickly taken and not long after they are sent a hefty fine.  The large sums of money owed to the government are in the hopes that people will stop running red lights and hopefully learn from their actions.

Video footage in general gives a sense of security in that someone is watching out for you, making sure you are safe.  As a result, these technological wonders have the ability to prevent future violations of those who believe they can get away with anything, literally.

The Evolution of Facebook

feature photo

Courtesy of Andrew Feinberg

Written by Kayla Dubnick, Online Features Editor

From humble beginnings in a simple Harvard dorm room, what started as an average student directory would soon grow into an internationally known household name. Mark Zuckerberg, the mastermind behind it all had concocted the site out of boredom and honestly, a mistake.

His roommates and he had decided to connect to other Ivy League schools such as Yale, Columbia, and Dartmouth. His online college database spread like wildfire. Unbeknownst to him, the idea would, in time, explode into a raging phenomenon that people of all ages and races will become utterly addicted to. To those who have not yet already read between the lines, the extraordinary sensation in reference is Facebook.

In the infancy of its creation, Facebook had been simply for the means of communication and the sharing of information with friends. Embarking in the year 2004, it had been geared towards those entering college who wished to keep in touch with their high school peers. At the time, it was considered MySpace’s complete opposite, for that site was directed towards the younger set. Facebook possessed a simplistic layout coupled with a few basic goals. The new website was taking the first baby steps of a journey that would erupt into an integral portion of people’s everyday lives.

Fast forwarding now to the year 2010, Facebook has now transformed into a multi-dimensional website that has now acquired several hundred million viewers. It’s the obsessive addiction paired with our immediate gratification that draw individuals towards Facebook. Whether a person is planning on composing a message, chatting with friends, or even writing on another’s wall, people are constantly communicating through various social networks that have been combined on one convenient site. Over time, the age barrier has been broken, for young adults are not the only ones who have hopped on the technological train. As the younger and older generations become more familiarized with ever-evolving technology, they too have found their place among the masses. However, Facebook is no longer just a way of communication for individuals, but a venue for local businesses and booming corporations worldwide. Junior Kalie Marsch comments, “Facebook provides an efficient way for businesses to communicate with the public, while achieving great successes through advertisements as well.” Whether they decide to create a group or fan club for their variety of services, they are guaranteed to lure viewers. In addition, most local or even global businesses are given the opportunity to sell their products directly on site.

While Facebook continues to swoon millions worldwide, people are incessantly involved in the world it has created. Its continuous evolution has not only brought about larger communication availabilities but business success as well. For a website that had started out as a sheer annual college directory, it has flourished into the air that some individuals breathe. As the new saying goes, “One small step for Facebook, one giant leap for the globalization of communication.”

“Blanco y Negro”: The Spanish IV Production

Written by Kayla Dubnick, Online Features Editor

Ellos vivieron felices para siempre… (They lived happily ever after)  The Spanish Play, “Blanco y Negro”, concluded with such thoughts and a sexy saga of salsa dancing.  For the first time in our school’s history, Spanish IV and Spanish II Native Speakers classes worked in unison with West Boca’s drama department to create a world outside of the usual curriculum.  The original play, written by Virgilio Piñera, was collaborated with each class’s unique additions to create a show all their own. The tireless work and insurmountable effort that went into the making of this presentation was palpable throughout the entire play.  Each student did everything in their power to make the show an utter success.  However, Mrs. Sanchez, the Spanish IV teacher, and Mr. Blank, the Drama director, were the true creative minds who made this entire production possible.

The meaning behind the indefatigable fight between “Blanco” y “Negro”, simply black and white, is taken by one’s own perspective.  Like many of Virgilio’s plays, a concise depiction of the situation is lacking.  The setting and characters may seem commonplace, as well as, the issue at hand.  However, we must ask ourselves if there is a deeper meaning behind the dispute.  We ask whether the story incases a feeling of reality and symbolism towards everyday life.  Another posed question is, if in fact, these ideas can be applied to any general or intricate opposing viewpoints.  The application of the final spoken word of the play, “Amarillo!”, or the color yellow, can possibly be portrayed as a representation of equality or sameness.

Each class sought to add in their own two-cents as by way of comic relief.  For example, the table scene upon which a black and white cookie lay strewn upon a dinner plate was a humorous way of depicting one’s own predilections.  Another addition was the salsa dances.  Included for dramatic effect, as well as way to ease the tension, each couple glided across the stage performing their eye catching moves.  The overall presentation was one to surely be remembered, one that set the standard high for the years to come.  The new inclusion to the curriculum will hopefully become an experience that each Spanish IV & Native Speakers class will be able to turn into a lasting tradition.

Cooking Prodigy Jeremy Salamon

Written by Kayla Dubnick, Online Features Editor

Each and every individual embodies an innate talent or a driven dedication for something they truly enjoy.  Whether it may involve sports or performing on stage, this certain something brings a smile to one’s face and warms the heart.  This is especially true for Jeremy Salamon.  A sophomore, in the Culinary Arts Academy at West Boca High School, is surely on his way to rising to the top.  His passion takes him into the kitchen, and cooking has always been the one thing he has wanted to excel in.  He has not only been inspired, but utterly captivated in watching his mother and grandmothers prepare meals since he was only nine years old.  Another successful chef who opened his eyes to the limitless possibilities of food was the famous Julia Child.  She has been Jeremy’s role model ever since he learned how to cook.  In his own words, Jeremy remarked, “Once you’ve completed all the hard work in the kitchen, the best part about cooking is seeing the smiles and receiving good reactions towards your food.”

There is always a favorite ingredient in ones kitchen that they prefer over the rest.  To Jeremy, no meal is complete without really good olive oil.  Using the best oils, he creates his favorite dish, Risotto.  There lies an amazing culinary program in Chapel Hill, North Carolina, that Salamon has spent the summer attending.  During his time at the C’est Si Bon Cooking School, he has been mentored by Dorette, one of the head chefs.  The invaluable experience that he took away from there has only deepened his love for cooking.

Luckily for him, the window of opportunity that has been is truly outstanding.  At the mere age of 13, he was invited to the Food Network Studios, in New York.  During his experience he had the advantage of meeting a few of the networks stars such as Giada De Laurentiis, Tyler Florence, and Ina Garten.  Jeremy was featured in an exclusive Food Network (FN) Dish special, where he was interviewed about his talents as an aspiring chef.

This past spring, he began designing his own website and it launched in July.  Currently, the site can be found at www.JeremyCooks.com .  He was interested in creating a user friendly guide to amateur cooks.  Salamon wanted to help inspire other young kitchen lovers, like himself, how to cook.  Offering a menu of easy tips, recipes, a special word of the day, and a personal blog makes this website something to crave.  Including what he refers to as “Cookisodes”, these mini video clips aid those who need a visual guide to the perfect meal.

Some of the other high points in his culinary education have been featured in a podcast for the Sun-Sentinel and an article in the Boca Raton Magazine.  One of the greatest opportunities has been his invitation to the American Culinary Federation (ACF) in August 2009.  He has competed in various food preparations with another West Boca High School student and cook, Paige Desimont.  They were awarded a bronze medal originally, but found out they actually took home the silver.  After the competition, the two discovered they were selected out of 16 students, who were also nominated for the ACF National Student of the Year.

It is obvious that this young, talented, and inspiring chef has a tremendous future ahead of him.  Currently, Jeremy is collaborating with a production company in Los Angeles for the possibility of starting a television show.  He is also working with executives at Mizner Park, in Boca Raton, to set up demonstrations with other chefs.  Ultimately, his dream is to attend the Culinary Institute of America (CIA).  Post-graduation, his plans include opening a restaurant of his very own.  According to Jeremy, the name will be, “Cole, after my middle name.”

The most important advice he gives to others in the kitchen is, “Keep on cooking, even if something goes wrong, don’t give up, and don’t stop believing”.
