Teenagers all across America wait in anticipation each week as MTV delves into the lives of those on 16 and Pregnant.  This show has been the first of many reality shows that depict pregnant youth.  The trials, tribulations, and struggles that any teen mom could possibly face are these teens’ potentially unfortunate realities.

The choices that these teens have to make and the life skills they are taught are unlike any of their peers.  The emotional rollercoaster that a teen may go through when faced with the heart wrenching decision of giving her child up for adoption is truly ineffable.  The struggle of facing a fiancé who no longer has interest in her or her son is cruelty in itself.  However, the biggest changes of all must come within oneself.  Entering motherhood is the realization that the attention must be shifted so that both parties can be taken care of in the proper manner.

It has been argued that shows such as 16 and Pregnant glorify the life of being a pregnant teenager. Most people can agree that this situation is not the ideal track for young girls.  We question the predilections of one who thoroughly enjoys a show such as this.  Austin Miller, a senior, says “It teaches teenagers that they need to be responsible or they could make choices in the future that could negatively affect them.”  In the same respect, sophomore Rein Jaackson believes “It positively influences people not to get pregnant at a young age.”

It is obvious that the life of a teen mom is far from glamorous, however, ultimately life altering.  What some may believe to be a miracle, others would view as a horror.  In a sense, it is almost as if MTV is trying to inform you of what not to do.  Overall, Alyssa Panagos, who is now a senior, thinks that it is aired simply, “So that we are informed of the possible effects and consequences of our actions.”

An Entertaining Situation : The Jersey Shore

Written by Melina Garcia, Online Editor-in-Chief

Like millions of others, most teens have been spending every Thursday night awaiting a new episode of Jersey Shore. In case you haven’t heard, MTV’S new hit reality show has taken the nation by storm. With nicknames such as “J-Wowww” and “Snookie” leading the pack, one can’t help but be glued to the television anticipating what will happen next.

The general plot is this: take 8 young, outspoken Italians, stick them in a house on the Jersey Shore, and watch the reality magic happen.

The drama pretty much unfolds itself, as J-Woww cheats on her boyfriend with another cast member, and Ronnie fights for Sammi Sweetheart’s attention. Above all else, who can ignore the dynamic duo of Pauly D and The Situation? The two cocky, womanizers prowl the shore looking for a different girl to mingle with for the night. With their motto, “GTL” (Gym, Tan, Laundry), it seems the men have found the secret to living life on the shore. The Situation’s suave manner and self-centered attitude leads him to argue with some of his cast members.

All together, the crew creates a whirlwind of drama, from going out to Karma and fist-pumping the night away, to getting in fist fights, to the unforgettable episode featuring Snookie being punched by a college “frat boy punk”. Despite all the drama, the now 7 cast members are one big, crazy, Italian family. It is clear that the men and women of Jersey Shore have captured our hearts as a ridiculously offensive yet fabulous show.

Ohh, Ohh We’re Halfway There!

Acceptances are coming in, decisions are near, and it’s time for us to admit: we’re almost done. Though some think it’s the end, in reality, it’s the beginning of everything we have worked for, strived for, and wanted for the past few years. Already in our senior year, most of us have applied to the colleges of our choice and want to move on, even if we’re not ready. But in fact, we are not done. Seniors are half way through their academic year and it seems to most that it is far from easy. So, it seems that giving up is not an option. At this point, relaxation or de-stressing would be unthinkable. We are at the halfway mark, and racing to the final stretch.

As most seniors are finding out where they are going to college, it is becoming more difficult to stay on track, and more of a priority to excite and rant about your future college. “It’s so hard to stay focused, especially now that were finding out where were getting into college” says senior Rebecca Gold. After being accepted to Florida State University, the college of her choice, Rebecca says “It feels like I have a weight lifted off my shoulders, but it will be even harder than ever to stay focused now”.  Rebecca is not the only one- like many other seniors; she will soon face the tempting pull of “senioritis”. Seniors can become too enchanted in the thought of going to college and moving away that they tend to forget about what is going on in the present; the second half of their senior academic year. Giving up with the unexcused absence of a case of “senioritis” is a reoccurring act in the second semester with seniors.

Even harder that our load of schoolwork, realizing that senior year is halfway over can be very emotionally unsettling. The friends we have made, bonds that have been secured, and memories we have had are going to come to an end. It’s tough to admit the truth that everyone will go their separate ways, and ultimately move on from high school. Senior, Jackie Goldstein says “Now that were half way through our senior year, it’s so hard to imagine that high school is almost over and we’ll all be moving onto a new chapter in our lives”.

We’ve almost made it. We are soon to be the graduating class of 2010, and move onto a newer, bigger, more realistic stage in our lives. The truth will hit us, just as fast as the past four years have gone by, we’ll be freshmen once again.
